Ringworm Frequently Asked Questions

What is Ringworm?

Ringworm is a contagious fungus that grows on your skin, hair, or nails.

What does Ringworm look like?

The fungus spreads into a circle, leaving the skin on the inside of the circle looking normal and the skin that forms the outer circle looks red and scaly.

How is Ringworm Transmitted?

You can get ringworm from physical contact with a person or animal that has the fungal infection. You can also get it from the floors of public showers, locker rooms, and damp surfaces. This is the most common way of contracting ringworm. You can also get ringworm from objects that an infected person has touched such as hats, combs, brushes, bed linens, telephones, mats, and shower stalls.

Can I get it from my pets?

YES! Ringworm is a zoonotic fungus and is easily spread to humans from animals.

What are the symptoms of ringworm?

The symptoms vary depending on the area of infection. On the scalp, it starts out as a small pimple that becomes larger, often leaving bald patches. On the body, the red round areas feel itchy. On the foot, it can cause dry, cracking, and scaly skin, which is sometimes referred to as athletes foot. On the nail,s it will cause a thickening of the nail bed, discoloration, brittleness, and sometimes disintegration of the nail. Ringworm of the groin area feels very itchy and is sometimes referred to as Jock Itch.

How long does it take ringworm to show up?

The fungus usually appears 4-10 days after contact on your skin, while scalp ringworm appears 10-14 days after contact.

Do I need to treat anything in my house?

Yes. You should change the air filters in your forced air units to catch the ringworm spores as they easily travel through your house. You should use a filter that is rated for allergies and fine dust. Use a hospital grade disinfectant to clean all surface areas and floors in your house. Wash all clothes and linens in hot water and bleach/borax to combat spores. Vacuum daily and dispose of the bag, then spray the vacuum with disinfectant.

Do I need to treat my pets?

YES! Failure to treat the infected pets will cause you to get re-infested with ringworm. We recommend visiting http://www.PetsBestRx.com/PetRingworm for pet ringworm products

When do I know that I am not contagious any longer?

Usually after 48 hours you are not contagious for most people. Our solution begins working on the fungus immediately and makes it impossible to be spread.
